The Cyberiad

Stanisław Lem · 1965

Trurl and Klapaucius, two robot constructors, travel the universe solving impossible problems. Lem's comic fables work simultaneously as mathematical jokes and philosophical koans. Translator Michael Kandel's English version is itself a masterwork.

The case against

Each fable runs the same circuit: Trurl or Klapaucius builds a wonder, hubris intervenes, irony collects the fee. Read three and you hold the algorithm; read all and the whimsy starts to grind. There are no people here, by design, and nothing at stake beyond cleverness; you admire continuously and feel almost nothing.
