Ubik

Philip K. Dick · 1969

Reality degrades, products from the future appear in the past, and the dead communicate from half-life. Dick at his most paranoid and most playful. The book that convinced readers he was either a genius or losing his mind. Probably both.

The case against

Dick wrote fast and it shows: flat dialogue, interchangeable secondary characters, prose that exists only to ferry you to the next idea. Pat Conley, the book's femme fatale, is cardboard with a power set. The metaphysics dazzles while the craft underneath runs on duct tape and amphetamine deadlines. You forgive the sentences for the ideas, or you put it down.
