Stories of Your Life and Others
Ted Chiang · 2002
Chiang's 2002 debut collection includes "Story of Your Life" (the basis for the film *Arrival*). Every story takes a single idea to its logical conclusion with philosophical precision and genuine human feeling. The most intellectually rigorous short SF of its generation.
The case against
Chiang writes ideas; sentences are how he ships them. His prose stays at room temperature no matter the content, characters often exist to ask the next clarifying question, and slighter pieces ('The Evolution of Human Science' runs a few pages) pad the table of contents. When a concept is weak, the story has nothing else to stand on.
