The Colour of Magic

Terry Pratchett · 1983

Pratchett's first Discworld novel began as parody in 1983 and became a 40-novel satirical examination of every human institution, set on a flat world atop four elephants atop a turtle. No other fantasy series has been as consistently funny, wise, or humane.

The case against

Start here and you might reasonably conclude Discworld is a string of gag set-pieces parodying sword-and-sorcery paperbacks nobody under fifty has read. You would be right about this book and wrong about the series. Rincewind flees from episode to episode, jokes accumulate where plot should, and it ends on a literal cliffhanger resolved in another volume.
