Cover of Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson

Snow Crash

Neal Stephenson · 1992

Stephenson coined the term "Metaverse" and created a pizza-delivery samurai named Hiro Protagonist who moves through a corporate-feudal America that looks increasingly familiar. Published in 1992. Dense, funny, prophetic.

The case against

Halfway in, Hiro sits down with a library daemon and the novel becomes a Sumerian linguistics lecture series that runs for chapters. Stephenson cannot land an ending and does not land this one. Worse, Y.T. is fifteen, and the scene Stephenson writes for her and Raven is one readers now flinch at for good reason.
