Butter Honey Pig Bread

Francesca Ekwuyasi · 2020

A Nigerian mother and her twin daughters (one gay, one haunted by a spirit) contend with diaspora, faith, food, and queer identity. Ekwuyasi's debut expands what African fiction written in English looks like.

The case against

Ekwuyasi defers the twins' reunion for nearly the whole novel, then resolves years of estrangement in a rush of kitchen-table forgiveness that the long buildup oversells. Taiye's unsent letters are a workshop device, and the abundant cooking (every chapter eats) starts as texture and ends as padding. Kambirinachi's spirit-child sections promise a haunting the book never quite commits to.
