White Teeth

Zadie Smith · 2000

Smith wrote it at 24, which is almost offensive. Three families in North London (Bangladeshi, Jamaican, English) collide across generations in this 2000 debut. The novel captures multicultural Britain with more energy and wit than any sociological study could manage. It announced a major talent.

The case against

Smith herself later winced at this book, and you can see why: every character drags in a backstory, every subplot sprouts two more, and the FutureMouse finale herds the entire cast into one room like a sitcom reunion. The energy is real. So is the suspicion that nobody, including the 24-year-old author, was steering.
