Eight generations in three hundred pages means each character gets one chapter, then dies into the family tree. The structure marches through a curriculum, plantation, coal prison, Harlem, heroin, every era assigned its representative, and the later chapters compress so hard they read like synopses of novels Gyasi had no room to write.
