His Dark Materials

Philip Pullman · 1995

The anti-Narnia. Pullman deploys fantasy's full toolkit (daemons, armored bears, parallel worlds) to demolish organised religion and recast the Miltonic fall as liberation rather than tragedy. The darkest children's fantasy ever written for adults.

The case against

Pullman's trilogy ends by trading story for sermon. The Amber Spyglass sprawls; Mary Malone spends chapters among wheel-riding creatures while the plot idles, and the confrontation with the Authority deflates into pamphlet. By the close, the anti-Lewis has reproduced Lewis's vice exactly: a children's adventure conscripted to deliver doctrine.
