American Gods

Neil Gaiman · 2001

What happened to the old gods when their worshippers crossed the Atlantic? Gaiman's 2001 novel weaves folklore, Americana, and loneliness into something simultaneously epic and intimate. It won the Hugo for good reason.

The case against

Shadow drifts through the whole novel as a blank, and the road-trip structure means episodes pile up without building. Gaiman promises a war between gods for hundreds of pages, then ends it with a deliberate anticlimax; the storm passes without breaking. The Lakeside chapters stall, the prose is serviceable, and the dead wife does the emotional heavy lifting.
