An American Marriage

Tayari Jones · 2018

A Black couple's marriage is shattered when the husband is wrongfully imprisoned. Jones writes about race, love, and incarceration not as issues but as the texture of a particular life, and the result is a novel about America that doesn't feel like an argument. An Oprah's book club selection that deserved it.

The case against

Roy's conviction takes a handful of pages; the courtroom, the appeal, the system itself all happen offstage. What remains is a love triangle, and Jones asks it to carry the weight of mass incarceration. Celestial reads cold, Andre reads convenient, and the epistolary middle section keeps the marriage at arm's length exactly when you need to feel it.
