Debut-collection unevenness is on full display: the strongest pieces (the title story, the dueling-mothers letters of 'Belles Lettres') sit beside sketches that end just as they find their subject. Fatima recurs across stories without quite accumulating, and the satire sometimes labels its targets instead of trusting you to catch them.
