Greer's passionate polemic argued that women had been castrated of their true nature (their sexuality, their anger, their full personhood) by patriarchal society. More electric and provocative than The Feminine Mystique, it set the tone for the radicalism of second-wave feminism.
The case against
Polemic by free association: Greer asserts, contradicts herself two chapters later, and moves on before the evidence arrives. Women come in for nearly as much scorn as men, the liberation on offer is mostly sexual and curiously private, and there is no politics here you could organize around. Electric in 1970; an argument with itself now.
