Woman on the Edge of Time

Marge Piercy · 1976

Consuelo, a Chicana woman institutionalized in a psychiatric ward, begins communicating with a visitor from a utopian 2137. Piercy's 1976 novel fuses revolutionary politics with speculative fiction, and the ambiguity of whether the future is real or delusion gives it its sting.

The case against

Utopia arrives here as a guided tour: Connie visits Mattapoisett, asks a question, receives a lecture, repeats, for chapters at a stretch. Piercy's invented pronoun 'per' and the future's encounter-group earnestness date the book to the decade of its birth. The asylum sections still burn; the pamphlet stapled to them is the price of admission.
