The case against
Le Guin subtitled it an ambiguous utopia, but her thumb rests on the scale: Urras is a capitalist cartoon and Anarres's flaws are the forgivable kind. Shevek lectures; everyone lectures; the alternating timelines are a seminar disguised as a structure. As political philosophy it is superb. As a novel it moves at the pace of a faculty meeting.
