All Systems Red
Martha Wells · 2017
A security robot hacks its own governor module and decides to spend its free will watching TV serials. Wells's Murderbot Diaries (beginning 2017) are funny, humane, and sharp about what personhood looks like from the inside of a manufactured consciousness.
The case against
Slight is the word. A novella-length episode whose actual plot, a corporate sabotage mystery on a survey planet, is forgettable scaffolding for the voice. The human scientists blur into one polite mass, and the series that follows resells this same sardonic loner across a shelf of sequels. Charming, fast, and thinner than its reputation suggests.
