Many Heyer scholars consider this her masterwork: a romance between a sheltered country girl and a dissolute rake who turns out to be capable of genuine love. The dialogue is extraordinary, the heroine unusually self-possessed for the period, and the love story develops with real emotional intelligence.
The case against
Heyer stalls the courtship with a third act of pure contrivance: a mother presumed dead turns up alive and remarried, and Venetia must engineer her own social ruin to win an ending the first half already promised. Damerel reforms because the genre requires it, right on schedule. And the period slang, however authentic, occasionally wants a glossary.
