Lucy Honeychurch's journey from dutiful convention to passionate choice is funny and then lovely. George Emerson's love for her remains literature's most direct and disarming.
The case against
Forster rigs the match. The Emersons get all his own opinions to speak, Cecil Vyse exists to be wrong about everything, and a convenient cluster of coincidences keeps delivering George to Lucy's elbow. Charming, yes, and slight; the third act resolves itself in a rush, as if Forster trusted the kiss more than the plot.
