Kulti
Mariana Zapata · 2015
A soccer player and her childhood hero become reluctant roommates. Zapata perfected the slow-burn.
The case against
Six hundred pages of slow burn means four hundred pages of waiting: Kulti barely speaks through the first act, and Sal narrates every non-event twice, once as it happens and once in recap. Zapata self-published this, and it reads unedited, repetitions and all. Patience is the genre's pleasure; here it shades into filibuster.
