All Fours
Miranda July · 2024
A 45-year-old woman's cross-country road trip becomes an extended stay in a motel room where she reimagines her entire life. July's novel about desire, aging, perimenopause, and creative reinvention was the most talked-about novel of 2024. Raw and formally daring.
The case against
Solipsism is the subject and also the limit. The narrator's crisis is bankrolled by twenty thousand dollars spent redecorating a motel room, a detail the novel notices less than you will, and the second half trades story for perimenopause discourse delivered in monologue. July's whimsy is a dialect; if you don't speak it, the provocations read as exhausting.
