Zami: A Biomythography / Sister Outsider
Audre Lorde · 1982
*Sister Outsider* collects Lorde's essential essays and speeches: "The Master's Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master's House," "Uses of the Erotic," "Poetry Is Not a Luxury." The founding texts of Black feminist thought-as-essay.
The case against
Lorde has been anthologized into fridge-magnet form: 'the master's tools' is now quoted approvingly by institutions doing exactly what the essay warned against, and the sentence gets remembered where the argument gets skipped. As a gathering of occasional speeches, the collection repeats itself; the same points arrive at different podiums. Read whole essays, not excerpts, or you are just collecting slogans.
