Half these essays are blog posts wearing a book jacket: Sweet Valley High, competitive Scrabble, recaps of Girls and Fifty Shades. The pop-culture pegs were dated within five years. Gay's voice is real and the title essay earns its reputation, but the collection runs long and thin, and the takes outnumber the arguments.
