The Thing Around Your Neck
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie · 2009
Adichie's story collection bridges Nigeria and the Nigerian diaspora in America. Stories of immigration, gender, and the specific texture of contemporary African life. "The Headstrong Historian" is a major achievement.
The case against
Several stories run the same arc: a Nigerian woman arrives in America, finds the man or the marriage wanting, and ends on a quiet epiphany. The thesis sometimes precedes the fiction, with characters built to carry an argument about diaspora. Strongest pieces aside, much of this reads like sketches for the novels Adichie wrote instead.
