The Secret Lives of Church Ladies

Nine stories that mostly run the same circuit: a Black woman, the church's expectations, and a desire that breaks against them. The best ones (the cobbler-baking mother, the daughters writing to each other) are very good; several others are barely sketches, over before they take a shape. Read together, the collection starts to feel like one premise tried at slightly different angles.
