The River and the Source / specifically: Land Without Thunder

Grace Ogot · 1968

Ogot was the first East African woman to publish a novel, but her stories may be more remarkable, blending Luo oral tradition with Western narrative form. Essential for the African short story tradition.

The case against

The collection is two books wearing one spine: village tales where the old gods still punish, and modern stories of nurses and city men, and the seams show where they are bound together. Some tales end on the tidy morals of the oral tradition, satisfying around a fire, abrupt on a page. And it has slipped to the far edge of the canon, barely kept in print, which is its own quiet indictment of what gets remembered.
