The Bloody Chamber
Angela Carter · 1979
Fairy tales rewritten with sex, blood, and feminist fury. Little Red Riding Hood becomes the wolf. Beauty devours the Beast.
The case against
Carter's prose is a velvet curtain soaked in perfume; gorgeous for ten pages, suffocating for two hundred. The collection also keeps performing one trick: take a fairy tale, add blood and desire, invert the ending. Two Beauty and the Beast variants and three wolf stories in a single slim book suggest even she knew the seam was narrow.
