The angry monologue that launched existentialism. Dostoyevsky's Underground Man — bitter, self-aware, paralyzed by consciousness — rejects every rational system that promises happiness. Written as a rebuttal to utopian socialism, it became the template for every unreliable narrator and anti-hero who followed.
The case against
Forty pages of spite before anything happens, and the spite is the point, which does not make it better company. Censors cut the chapter where Dostoevsky pointed toward redemption, and he never restored it, so the book argues one side at full volume. Liza deserves more than being the instrument of the narrator's self-disgust, and the novel half knows it.
