Girls at War and Other Stories
Chinua Achebe · 1972
Achebe's only story collection, written during and after the Biafran War. Stories of colonial aftermath and civil war rendered without sentimentality. The same moral seriousness as Things Fall Apart, now in compressed form.
The case against
Achebe himself called twelve stories in twenty years a lean harvest, and he was grading accurately: the early pieces are university exercises, and only the Biafran stories, the title piece and "Civil Peace" among them, carry the weight of the novels. A completist's collection; the genius lives elsewhere.
