The Making of the English Working Class

E.P. Thompson · 1963

Thompson's 900-page masterwork recovered the lived experience of ordinary working people during Britain's Industrial Revolution: their cultures, their struggles, their self-organization. It invented "history from below." Changed how historians think about whose experience matters.

The case against

Thompson's nine hundred pages rescue the stockingers and weavers from condescension while barely noticing the women who worked beside them. His loathing of Methodism runs so hot that the analysis bends around it, and the Marxist arc, class consciousness arriving on schedule by 1832, reads more like destiny than evidence. Partisan history, grandly sustained, and in places simply wrong.
