We

Yevgeny Zamyatin · 1924

Written before *Brave New World*, before *1984*, in Soviet Russia. Orwell read it. Huxley read it. Every totalitarian-surveillance novel since owes Zamyatin's 1924 dystopia a debt. D-503's gradual awakening is still the template.

The case against

D-503 narrates in fragments and broken-off equations, and whichever translation you choose, that choppiness is the experience; the prose fights you on every page. Characters are numbers by design, which does not make them company. Historically indispensable, and sentence by sentence a grind: the dystopia everyone cites and almost nobody rereads for pleasure.
