The Way of Kings
Brandon Sanderson · 2010
Sanderson's 2010 opening volume of The Stormlight Archive is the most ambitious fantasy world-building project of this century: an alien world swept by massive highstorms, a magic system rooted in oaths, and character arcs that take trauma and moral struggle seriously over thousands of pages.
The case against
One thousand pages, and the plot properly starts around page six hundred. Kaladin runs bridges, despairs, runs more bridges. Sanderson's prose is serviceable at best, his humor (Shallan's wit, Wit himself) lands hard on the page, and the interludes keep yanking you away from anyone you care about. This is volume one of a planned ten. Budget accordingly.
