The Fifth Season
N.K. Jemisin · 2015
On a planet wracked by apocalyptic seasons, a woman searches for her kidnapped daughter. Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy made history: three consecutive Hugo Awards for Best Novel, 2016 through 2018. The second-person narration is a formal gamble that pays off completely.
The case against
Misery is the weather here, and it never breaks: dead children, slavery, betrayal, then another season of each. The second-person sections are a gamble you may simply lose, the central twist telegraphs itself early, and the book ends as a down payment on two more volumes rather than a story that finishes.
