Roadside Picnic
Arkady & Boris Strugatsky · 1972
Aliens visited Earth, left their litter behind, and departed without making contact. Their detritus fills the lethal "Zone," now scavenged by desperate stalkers. The Strugatskys wrote the definitive novel of alien indifference; Tarkovsky later filmed *Stalker* from it.
The case against
Episodes years apart, viewpoint characters who vanish, a final chapter that ends mid-prayer on a borrowed wish: the structure drops you in potholes the Zone did not dig. Soviet editors mauled the text for years, and older English editions descend from compromised versions; which translation you buy matters. Guta, like most of the women, exists to wait and worry.
