More Than Human

Theodore Sturgeon · 1953

Six broken, marginal people discover they can combine into a single gestalt consciousness, a new species. Sturgeon's 1953 novel is about loneliness, belonging, and what it might mean to be more than the sum of damaged parts.

The case against

Built outward from a magazine novella ('Baby Is Three'), with two sections written to flank it, and the joins show: the psychoanalytic middle is the real book, the finale resolves everything with what amounts to a lecture on ethics. Sturgeon's 1953 furniture (the 'idiot' savant, the therapy-couch framing, the way it writes women) has aged the way furniture does.
