Two authors having enormous fun is the engine and the drag: every page detours for a footnote or a gag, the Them and the Four Horsemen multiply subplots the middle cannot carry, and the Apocalypse fizzles when Adam waves it away. Comedy this dense ages unevenly; the answering-machine jokes already need annotation.
