Doomsday Book

Connie Willis · 1992

A history student from the future is accidentally sent to the Black Death instead of her intended medieval period, while a flu epidemic in her present prevents rescue. Willis interleaves the two timelines to create the most emotionally devastating time-travel novel in SF.

The case against

Half this novel is people failing to reach each other by telephone. Willis gives 2054 Oxford time travel but no voicemail, and the present-day chapters run on missed messages, officious minor characters, and bell-ringer comedy that exhausts itself by the third repetition. The medieval half earns its devastation; getting there means wading through a campus farce twice as long as it should be.
