Nobody in Area X has a name; you follow the biologist, the psychologist, the surveyor, functions in a fog. VanderMeer withholds every answer on principle, the plot amounts to a walk, a tower, a lighthouse, and the narrator's affect is flatter than the Southern Reach's files. Atmosphere is the whole meal, and you may finish hungry.
