Annihilation
Jeff VanderMeer · 2014
Four women enter Area X, a mysterious ecological zone where nature has turned strange and hostile. VanderMeer's 2014 novel is nature horror that makes Lovecraft look quaint, trading cosmic dread for biological dread. The prose mimics contamination.
The case against
Nobody in Area X has a name; you follow the biologist, the psychologist, the surveyor, functions in a fog. VanderMeer withholds every answer on principle, the plot amounts to a walk, a tower, a lighthouse, and the narrator's affect is flatter than the Southern Reach's files. Atmosphere is the whole meal, and you may finish hungry.
