20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Jules Verne · 1870

Captain Nemo and the Nautilus established the template for the brilliant-but-alienated scientist and the technological marvel. Verne posed a simple question in 1870 (what if a submarine could circle the earth?) and made rigorous scientific speculation narratively irresistible.

The case against

Verne keeps interrupting the voyage so Conseil can classify fish, genus by genus, for pages at a stretch. Characters are functions: Ned Land complains, Aronnax marvels, Nemo broods. And the standard Victorian English translation cut nearly a quarter of the text and mangled the measurements, so the copy on your shelf may be worse than the book Verne wrote.
