Simon spends half the book being plainly rude, and the novel files it under romantic tension; the enemies phase is one man's bad manners, and the lovers phase requires forgetting them. Subtract the Renaissance faire and what remains is a stock contemporary romance, third-act misunderstanding included, visible from the turkey-leg stand.
