The Makioka Sisters

Junichiro Tanizaki · 1948

Japan's greatest domestic novel is, at its heart, a meditation on love and time. Four sisters in pre-war Osaka, trying to find husbands, their private longings. Tanizaki writes with breathtaking psychological subtlety; the love stories here are all the more powerful for being mostly unspoken.

The case against

Marriage negotiation, polite refusal, repeat: Yukiko's suitors arrive and fail in sequence across five hundred pages, with illnesses, vitamin injections, and kimono logistics catalogued between rounds. Tanizaki's patience is the method, and it asks for yours in bulk. The novel then ends mid-journey, en route to a wedding, on a famously unglamorous final sentence.
