The House of the Spirits

Isabel Allende · 1982

Allende's magnificent debut traces love through four generations of the Trueba family. The framework is magical realism, but the emotional core is the bond between Esteban Trueba and Clara: a man and woman cosmically wrong for each other and completely unable to exist apart. Their love is passionate, complicated, and ultimately redemptive.

The case against

Allende's debut wears its debt to García Márquez openly: the clairvoyant matriarch, the house spirits, the generational saga, all borrowed rather than discovered. Esteban Trueba rapes peasant women for decades, and the book labors to grant him a redemptive old age anyway. By the final third the magic drains away into political melodrama.
