The Duke and I

Julia Quinn · 2000

The first Bridgerton novel launched a beloved historical romance series, combining Regency wit with sparkling banter and emotional depth. Quinn's Simon and Daphne became cultural icons after the Netflix adaptation, but the novel is sharper and funnier than any screen version. A modern romance classic.

The case against

Daphne, desperate for an heir, takes advantage of Simon while he is drunk, and the novel treats it as a marital squabble to smooth over. It reads as assault; the book never notices. That chapter aside, what remains is bright, weightless banter on a Regency stage with the historical texture of a theme park. The controversy is the only heavy thing here.
