The case against
Daphne, desperate for an heir, takes advantage of Simon while he is drunk, and the novel treats it as a marital squabble to smooth over. It reads as assault; the book never notices. That chapter aside, what remains is bright, weightless banter on a Regency stage with the historical texture of a theme park. The controversy is the only heavy thing here.
