Red, White & Royal Blue
Casey McQuiston · 2019
The president's son falls for the Prince of Wales. A queer romance that became a cultural phenomenon.
The case against
McQuiston's obstacles are tissue: a closeted prince, a reelection, and every adult in two governments behaving like a supportive group chat. The banter never modulates; the First Son, the prince, and the Queen's staff all quip in the same Twitter cadence. As wish fulfillment it charms. As fiction it is weightless, and its fantasy 2020 election has aged into a wince.
