Dev's reality-show framing promises froth, then the book delivers sexual assault, a father's suicide, and a mother's decades of secrets, and the registers never reconcile. Flashbacks keep interrupting the present-day romance just as it builds; Ashna and Rico's central rift survives years on willful non-communication that Austen's Anne Elliot, whose story this borrows, was never guilty of.
