Yoshimoto's debut is a brief, piercing love story about grief and food and the strange warmth of unexpected family. Mikage and Yuichi's relationship forms in the wreckage of their respective losses. The Japanese pop-literary voice is entirely its own; the love story is gentle and specific and genuinely moving.
Brevity is the whole bet: two novellas, feather-light, and whether they pierce or evaporate depends on your tolerance for sentences as simple as greeting cards. The English translation flattens Yoshimoto's pop cadence into something blander still. Eriko, the trans mother, is handled with a breeziness that has not aged well. Two hours to read; the question is what remains by dinner.
