Kafka invented a mode of reality that now bears his name. The nightmare that looks like bureaucracy; the system that condemns without explanation. Every modern anxiety about power, legibility, and being trapped in a process you cannot understand: Kafka got there first, in 1925, writing in German in Prague.
The case against
Kafka never finished it; Max Brod assembled the chapters after his death, and the order is partly an editor's guess. The middle sections are interchangeable by design, which means they are also repetitive in practice. Women fling themselves at Josef K. for no discernible reason. You are meant to feel trapped, and you will.
