Huxley's 1932 nightmare looks more like our present than Orwell's does. His dystopia runs not on surveillance but on comfort, pleasure, distraction, and the elimination of meaningful suffering. The people in Brave New World are happy. That is the horror.
The case against
Huxley was an essayist wearing a novelist's coat. Chapter three cuts between voices like a lecture with sound effects, Lenina exists to be looked at, and the climax is the Savage and Mustapha Mond debating philosophy across a desk. The ideas have aged frighteningly well; the people carrying them were never alive to begin with.
