Mandel writes a novelist famous for a pandemic book suffering through a book tour during a pandemic, and the mirror gets smudgy with self-regard. Her time-travel machinery is secondhand, the simulation question included, and the crossover characters reward homework in her earlier novels. The whole thing is finished in an afternoon and resolves with suspicious tidiness.
