Cursed Bunny
Bora Chung · 2022
Short stories in the tradition of the dark fantastic: corporate capitalism, body horror, and patriarchy filtered through fairy tale. Chung's collection represents the best of Korean literary horror and announced Anton Hur as a major translator.
The case against
Uneven in the way most prize-shortlisted collections are. The title story and 'The Head' justify the hype; the back half drifts into sketches where the body horror does the work the ideas should. Chung's allegories can be blunt instruments too: capitalism bad, patriarchy worse, message received by page three of each tale.
