The case against
Bennett refuses plot on principle and narrates partly in a first-person plural that keeps circling back to correct and reconfirm itself. The verbal tics charm for twenty pages, then grate for two hundred. In place of story you get annotated reading lists, anecdotes recircled, and the fable of Tarquin Superbus and his blank book, retold until the mystery wears through. Pond did this shorter and better.
